Dmytro Antonyuk “Polish Castles in Ukraine through the Eyes of Dmytro Antonyuk”
One of the speakers at the Art of Victory Forum is Ukrainian journalist, researcher, and traveler Dmytro Antoniuk. He is the author of a guidebook that contains 512 ancient castles and buildings associated with Polish families that have remained on the territory of Ukraine. He believes that drawing attention to these unique cultural and historical monuments will help preserve them.
Over the years, Dmytro has developed a certain algorithm for finding such forgotten monuments, including the memoirs of travelers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
“It seems to me that I have traveled around and know about 90% of the monuments that we have left related to Polish families, but I hope that there is still something to discover,” says Dmytro.
What the researcher sees while traveling around Ukraine causes sadness and shame: more than a third of these monuments are in a state of severe disrepair, and in a few years they may collapse to the ground. And the state, which is supposed to take care of architectural monuments of national importance, often fails to do so. But Dmytro Antoniuk hopes to reach out to the authorities.
For now, he is traveling around Ukraine and other countries to present his book and feels that he will soon have to print additional copies.
“I printed 1000 copies of this book, which was published in July this year. There are not many left. I hope that I was able to convey the information to those people who need it. Among other things, I donate these books to libraries and some museums so that people have maximum access to this information,” the author says.
According to him, many readers, inspired by the book, are ready to travel along its paths to see the sights described in it with their own eyes. In order to make this journey as easy as possible, Dmytro Antoniuk’s book contains not only photos and descriptions of the sights, but also QR codes that lead to a specific place via Google Maps.
